Watertown Mayer Wrestling Club Goals

It is our goal to concentrate on teaching the sport and its fundamentals, keeping the focus on growing the kids and growing the whole program, rather than trying to develop youth wrestling champions. While we strive to make each wrestler the best they can be, it’s more important to give them the fundamentals and a base to continue to develop their wrestling skills as they get older and move into more competitive arenas.

As a group we will:

  1. Provide a safe and positive experience for wrestlers of all ages.
  2. Teach our young wrestlers the skills, rules, strategy and discipline of wrestling and encourage good sportsmanship, self-confidence and physical fitness.
  3. Promote healthy and safe physical activity for all participants.
  4. Build character by offering a positive experience, regardless of individual ability, stressing skill development and a positive attitude regardless of winning or losing.
  5. Assist wrestlers in developing and achieving personal goals that they set. Each and every wrestler may have a different set of goals - for some it is to win a state championship and for others it may be to just participate and have fun. The goals you set are up to you.
  6. Encourage all kids to participate in multiple individual and team meets.

Remember it is about the young kids

As with any youth program, the focus should be on the kids. Typically, whenever you run into an instance where there is an issue, most often than not it is because an ADULT has veered away from these principles. Remember:

  1. The wrestlers are just kids.
  2. It is just one match in their life.
  3. The coaches are volunteers.
  4. The referees are human.
